SLOUGH Netball Club co-founder and Chairperson Charlene Richardson believes the sport is back on the map in Slough after growing interest in the club.

The netball club was founded a year ago by a group of players that travelled elsewhere to play the sport.

With the backing of Slough Borough Council, the club now has its own Monday night league at Salt Hill Park and offers junior netball sessions for 11-16 year-olds at the Montem Leisure Centre.

Richardson explained to the Observer: “We thought why not have netball on our doorstep so we approached the council to get the space because there used to be a league at Salt Hill Park 30 years ago.

“The adult sessions are going really well and we’re producing club teams with people from a grassroots level to now play competitive netball.

“People are getting back into netball from schools and other places and now they’re able to play in the town under the club name.

“We have three adult teams and the council has helped us to set up juniors sessions. We had 30 kids at the first season and now it’s running weekly, so that’s really good.

“We’ve not set up an adult competitive league of our own and are halfway through the first season. There are eight teams in the league but we are recruiting more.

“The response we’ve had over the last six months has been phenomenal. Netball is back on the map and we want it to stay.

“For me it has been a bit overwhelming. We dedicate four a five days a week to it plus around a full-time job.

“I’m really proud of what we’ve done. We’ve made it sustainable and have got a good support network.”
