LANGLEY Hornets manager Allan McNicol hopes that lifting the Presidents Cup this season will set an example for younger members of the club.

The Hornets beat Hillingdon Legion 2-1 after extra time thanks to goals from James Andy and Josh Richardson at The Gore on Bank Holiday Monday.

The victory secured a first piece of silverware in senior football for the club and was an emotional success for McNicol, who has improved their fortunes since taking over two seasons ago.

He told the Observer: “It was a really tough game with Hillingdon Legion that could have gone either way, but we wanted it more on the day and everyone gave 100 per-cent.

“The 90 minutes was enough on the touchline because it was heart in mouth stuff at times.

“I felt we done enough to win even though Hillingdon scored a good goal and our keeper made some fantastic saves to keep us in the game.

“It was a very good game for the neutral because it could have gone either way, but I felt we were the better team out there.

“It’s a big stepping stone and we’ve had great support from the whole club. Hopefully it sets a good example for the younger ones who want to play for a club that are winning things.

“Everyone wants to play and win a game of football so lets encourage them and give them something to play for.”

Commenting on their run to the cup final, he added: “We’ve had a tricky run to get to the final with wins against Division Two teams but I’m pleased for everyone.

“We knew it would be a tough run but I feel we deserved to be there.”

McNicol continued: “I’ve been doing it four a couple of years now, so it was an emotional win and I’m buzzing.

"We were getting beat by four or five goals week in week out, so had to turn that around, and the lads deserve credit for it.

"I'm sure all the teams in the league will be chuffed for us. They used to beat us week in week out, but we brought our guys together and now we have a chance of finishing in second place.

"We've had new players come in and started training in midweek since I took over. We do not just turn up and play on Saturday anymore.

"Julian Prime organises our midweek training and books facilities during the winter months.

"We get 18-19 players at training, so we're certainly not struggling for numbers, and the boys are enjoying playing football."
