SLOUGH Town were denied a third straight National League South victory after a last-gasp penalty miss in a 0-0 draw with Torquay United.

Rebels were awarded an 88th-minute spot-kick by referee Stephen Hughes after substitute Ben Harris had been brought down.

However, Gulls debutant keeper Alex Bass kept out Simon Dunn’s effort to salvage a point for the visitors at Arbour Park on Saturday.

Slough went into the game high in confidence after back-to-back wins against Gloucester City and Weston-super-Mare.

But they struggled to break down a well-drilled Torquay defence which has conceded just one goal in five games this season.

Rebels threatened in the seventh minute when Mark Nisbet’s header failed to trouble Bass.

James Dobson’s long-range effort soon after tested Bass before the lively Chris Flood came agonisingly close to converting crosses from both George Wells and Dobson.

The Gulls also had chances of their own and saw Brett Williams hit the post in the 13th minute.

Then Jamie Reid wasted a golden opportunity when he dragged an effort wide shortly before the interval.

Rebels were also indebted to some outstanding goalkeeping from Jack Turner.

Slough Observer:

Action from Slough Town's 0-0 home draw with Torquay United.

He made three sensational saves when smothering the ball at the feet of captain Williams in the 55th minute before making instinctive stops to deny Samir Nabi and Asa Hall in the 65th and 79th minutes.

Jason Banton also shaved the woodwork for the visitors during a dominant period for the visitors in the second half.

But, having survived those scares, Rebels could have snatched victory at the death when George Essuman fouled Harris in the box – only for Bass to come to Torquay’s rescue by saving Dunn’s spot-kick.

Slough Town face a trip to bottom club East Thurrock United this Saturday then host Dulwich Hamlet next Monday (both 3pm).
