CHALVEY Sports chairman Scott Young admits the Stabmonks are witnessing the harsh reality of taking a step up a level this season.

The newly-promoted side started the campaign with a bang and went unbeaten in their first three matches, which included a win against Burnham.

However, a 1-0 loss to 10-man Chinnor on Saturday was a third consecutive defeat, leaving them in fourth position in Division One East.

Young insists Chalvey are relishing the challenge and backs them to end their losing run soon, but he admits they must be more clinical in front of goal.

He told the Observer: “We had some great chances against Abingdon Town two weeks ago and could’ve come away with a point, but we didn’t take them and that has been the biggest contributing factor recently.

“We were quite rightly beaten by Wallingford Town last weekend but, on the flip side, we still created chances. If you can take those chances it brings you back into a game and brings your head up a little.

“It’s all a learning curve for us and we’re still getting used to playing on a Saturday and then Tuesday. Injuries are no excuse because it happens at every club but we’ve suffered a little bit lately.

“We’re playing to a decent standard but are not taking our chances and getting punished against some decent sides.”

Young continued: “The mood is still upbeat and the lads continue to buy into what we’re trying to do. We’re enjoying the step up and the attitude of the players is very good.

“It’s definitely a learning curve and we’re enjoying it, but we need to get out of this losing run we find ourselves in. We’re not a team that’s used to losing and that’s why we’ve got to bounce back.

“We’re now realising the step up and that we need to be more clinical, not just the forwards but any player that’s in a position to score.

“It’s a good league with a good standard of football and a big plus point for us to be at step six.”

Chalvey return to action with a trip to third from bottom Wokingham & Emmbrook next Tuesday (7.45pm).
