SLOUGH Sirens manager Chris Martin has explained that his players are still getting to know one another despite a 6-1 win against Peterborough Phantoms on Sunday, writes Rob Stevens.

The Sirens have won both their opening matches this season although it has been challenging with a four-week gap between games.

Martin told the Observer: “We’ve had a break of a few weeks so it’s good to get back into a run of games really.

“Unfortunately women’s ice hockey comes second to the senior programme, so when the ice is available they will squeeze us in.

“We’ve not got six games on the trot in the next six weeks and then a month off. We’ve just got to train hard in the gaps in between matches.”

He continued: “We made a slow start on Saturday but we found our feet in the second and third periods. We got our feet moving and things started to happen a lot better.

“There were a few nerves and people are still gelling.

“Peterborough came out very strong in the first 20 minutes and defended really well with a very strong netminder.

“We had to change a few things in our plan to open up the shooting lanes and that’s when the goals started to come, but Peterborough were definitely a challenge for us.”

The win means the Sirens have moved up to third position in the league table ahead of a trip to Streatham Storm this Saturday (6.30pm).

Martin commented: “Streatham have had a slow start to be fair, but since they joined the league they’ve always been steady in the top-half and pushing for the play-offs.

“I expect a tough game because Streatham have had two away matches against two top sides.”
