CHALVEY Sports manager Steve Quelch believes his side showed grit and determination in a 3-1 win at Pewsey Vale in the Hellenic League Floodlit Cup on Tuesday, writes Rob Stevens.

Goals from Lawrie Toombs, Bryan Taylor and Kyson Rochford ensured victory for the Stabmonks in the first round tie at The Recreation Ground.

Quelch told the Observer: "It was a very good win considering the distance we had to travel and that the weather conditions weren't ideal with the wind and rain.

"We had the majority of the clear cut chances to be fair, so it was a good, solid performance against a decent side.

"We weren't perfect but we played to the conditions and in the right areas plus, considering we had a few players pull out late on as well, we deserved the win."

Chalvey do not have a fixture to fulfill this Saturday but welcome Chinnor to Arbour Park in the Subsidiary Cup next Tuesday (7.45pm).

It will be the third meeting between the two sides this season and their rivalry currents stands at one win apiece, though Quelch explained his side will take added confidence into the game.

He said: "It's another meeting with them but we'll go into it quite buoyant because we've put up a couple of results now. We're starting to grow as a team and understand how we want to play.

"If we win, it will continue to build momentum and I'll take that. We will take the game seriously and will take a win all day long because winning breeds confidence.

"However, I'm more interested in the league, Slough Town Cup and Berks & Bucks Cup this season, so wouldn't be disappointed if we went out in the Subsidiary Cup."
