CHALVEY Sports manager Merv Lloyd hopes that a short break will have benefitted his side ahead of their clash with Newport Pagnell Town Reserves on Saturday.

The Stabmonks picked up a few injuries in the 3-1 win at Aston Clinton two weeks ago but were able to recover without a fixture to fulfill last weekend.

Chalvey welcome Newport Pagnell to Arbour Park in the quarter-finals of the Berks & Bucks Senior Trophy this Saturday (2pm) and Lloyd believes it will come down to who wants it more on the day.

He told the Observer: “We had no game last weekend but I’m glad because we had six players out and a big match this Saturday.

“We had two players come off injured at Aston Clinton and sometimes it’s better to give players a rest rather than antagonise those injuries.

“If the injured players rest then we should be okay for Saturday, but if they’re unfit then we will never compete with Newport.

“We have one player doubtful with a knee injury but we do have a big squad. We could make changes and, no matter what we go with, it gives others the chance to prove their worth.

“Everyone is quite happy and feel they’re making an achievement to even get on the bench.

“I’ve taken a lot of phone calls but am happy with the players I have this season.”

Looking ahead to the Senior Trophy tie, Lloyd said: “Newport will be coming a long way and will want to get through to the next round, and so do we.

“I used to manage against Newport in the Suburban League and know they can play and adapt.

“Newport are not going to sit in a car for 55 miles and not come to turn it on. They will be focused and up for it, so it will be a good game and down to who wants it more.

“I will not lose any sleep over playing Newport. If we’re as good as we can be, then I will have no right to question their performance or ability. If we give 100 per cent then I will have no complaints.”
