Last season’s quarter-finalists Port Vale booked their place in the FA Cup Second Round with a 4-2 victory over National League strugglers Scunthorpe United at Vale Park.
Keyrol Figueroa, Onel Hernandez and Max Watters gave The Valiants a three-goal lead before James Norwood and Declan Howe provided Jon Brady’s side with a late scare.
Vale dominated much of the game and opened the scoring on eight minutes, when Figueroa tapped home after getting on the end of Jaheim Headley’s low cross.
The hosts almost found a second moments later too, as Louis Jones produced heroics to deny Figueroa and Headley in quick succession with two fine reaction stops.
Luke Brennan and Dan Batty came close to finding an equaliser for Scunthorpe, before Hernandez lashed past Jones on the hour mark after good work from Figueroa.
Watters added a third three minutes later to finish off an excellent team move, when The Iron attempted an unlikely comeback with time running out.
Norwood headed past Marko Marosi on 85 minutes, before Howe’s back post effort set up a nervy stoppage time for Vale.
Oli Lynch slotted past Jones in stoppage time though, as the League Two side secured a seventh successive home win to squeeze into the next round.
