SLOUGH moved up to fourth in the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Premier with a 33-13 win at Hungerford on Saturday.

The Greenies have lost just once in their last six matches, a defeat at the hands of champions-elect Swindon College Old Boys, and head coach Alan Walters believes his team can head-up the chasing pack.

“Swindon shouldn’t be in this league, they’re very good, but we’re competitive with everyone else so there’s no reason why we can’t be second best,” he told the Observer.

“We’re fourth in the table and that was a challenge for us at the start of the season. We are trying to get consistency and we’re getting that with the same players. We’re giving them the tools to work with and they’re getting better. They’re understanding the gameplan better.

“Our discipline is a lot better, which makes a hell of a difference, and we’re getting results.”

On Saturday, tries were scored by Ben Ambrose, Joe Sole, Rob King, Aman Grewal and Max Miles, who also booted four of his five conversion attempts.

“We had a gameplan for a very cold day,” commented Walters. “We started very quickly whereas in previous games we’ve been slow and tried to play catch up. We came out of the traps quickly and were 21-0 up after 20 minutes.

“We tried to keep our concentration but let them back in, but we withstood most of their attack and broke away for a couple of late tries.

“We had 70-80 per-cent of play and possession and 50-60 per-cent of territory. It was a good overall performance from the forwards and backs.”

Slough welcome rivals Phoenix to Tamblyn Fields this Saturday (2.15pm) and Walters is looking forward to another local derby.

“We’re hoping for a good honest game of rugby and look forward to hosting them again,” he said.

“Phoenix got a good win last Saturday so we’re not taking them for granted. They’re going through a transitional period the same as us. They have a very good pack, they dominated us last time, but we had a different set of skills in the backs.”
