ALAN WALTERS believes Slough are really enjoying their rugby thanks to a better understanding of the gameplan.

Slough beat rivals Phoenix 50-11 at Tamblyn Fields on Saturday to extend their unbeaten run in the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Premier to four matches.

“The guys are doing really well,” a delighted Greenies head coach told the Observer. “There’s a lot of understanding gone into it, the culture, gameplan and our discipline.

“We’ve been lucky with injuries so we’re using the same players and it’s starting to click. Most of the players are understanding the gameplan now and are seeing that it works. From there they’re playing heads up rugby and really enjoying it.”

A quick start from Phoenix on Saturday put immediate pressure on the Slough line and within minutes a penalty saw them open the scoring.

The visitors then got a second penalty attempt right in front of the posts but a dreadful attempt at goal saw the kick miss its target.

The Greenies finally found their feet and a great run from Joe Sole took the ball past three defenders before Colby Short finished the attack and took it over the line. The conversion was missed.

Phoenix immediately replied with a try of their own, but good passing play from a maul found Charlie Turner, who ran it over with ease to put Slough back in the lead at 10-8.

Turner then appeared from nowhere to score again and Max Miles kicked the extras for a 17-8 advantage.

A short explosive run from Matt Fenwick led to Tom Young adding to the lead, taking the Greenies in to the break 22-8 ahead.

The second half saw Aman Grewal force a converted try for Slough before a penalty was given to Phoenix and they successfully slotted it over.

The hosts responded with a wave of attacks that saw converted tries for Miles, Alex Allen and Rob King in the final few minutes to seal an emphatic win.

Walters commented: “It was a tough game to be honest. Phoenix flew out of the blocks in a typical derby with a lot of niggle to start off with. We settled into the game in the second half and scored some good tries.

“It was a good performance in the second half when we put the gameplan into place, with lots of individual displays as well.

“We were trying things that we shouldn’t have in the first half but we stuck to the gameplan in the end.

“It is a good feeling to have the bragging rights but it’s another game of rugby and we move on to the next one.”

Now fourth in the table, Slough travel to bottom of the league Risborough on Saturday March 4, and Walters will not be taking them lightly.

“They came down to us and won back in November,” he said. “It was a horrible loss for us considering the form we were in. We had won two on the bounce before that.

“Risborough were bottom of the league then so I think we expected an easy game. We’re taking them seriously now.”
