SLOUGH CC are celebrating the launch of the next phase of its expansion thanks to £50,000 of funding from Biffa Award.

The Biffa Award is a multi-million pound fund that helps to build communities and transform lives through awarding grants.

The grants are for community and environmental projects across the UK, and has provided Slough with the most advanced all-weather cricket nets on the market.

The project, which was awarded funding under Biffa Award’s recreation theme, replaced and extended an old outdoor non-turf net system.

The new facilities at Upton Court Road provide five separate nets in an outdoor, but enclosed, all-weather surface.

It also provides different surfaces to suit various types of bowling and batting experiences, from slow spinning to medium and fast tracks.

Slough, which is well-known locally for engaging with the community, has five regular weekly groups each attracting more than 30 users.

A survey carried out with club members confirmed that more than 40 per cent were disappointed with its previous external net facilities.

The project has also created a small multi-use area that will be used for fielding and movement drills.

And the new facilities will now be available all year round.

Slough CC chairman and first team captain, Bobby Sher, said: “We would like to thank the Biffa Award for this significant investment in the future cricket potential of Slough.

“In recent years we have seen a growing increase in demand from young people wishing to play cricket.

“These facilities will enable them to use the best available to any youngsters in the country, and will allow our seniors to perform at the highest levels.

“We look forward to working with parents, coaches and new players as we maximise their participation.” Project manager, Jameel Rahman, added: “There’s a buzz within Slough about the club’s new nets which will benefit the local community immensely.

“The youth teams can now train in a facility which is safe and secure.” Gillian French, Biffa Award programme manager, said: “We’re delighted to support this project because of the contribution it will make to engage more young people.

“The project will also enable many more of them to develop and go on to represent Slough, their County, or even England.

“We know how difficult it can be when young people have a desire to participate but are prevented by a lack of facilities due to insufficient resources.

“We wish Slough Cricket Club and the Slough community many years of enjoyment and pleasure in building great cricketers for the future.” Since 1997, Biffa Award has awarded grants totalling more than £155 million to thousands of worthwhile community and environmental projects across the UK.
