AN OBSESSED asylum seeker bombarded a woman with love letters and food before getting her face tattooed on his forearm, a court heard.

Surjit Kanda, of Long Readings Lane, Slough, also left fresh fruit and dairy products on Deepika Kohli’s doorstep in Hammersmith, several times a week between February and December last year.

The 26-year-old believed he was in an intimate relationship with the victim, but she told him she did not want to be contacted by him and had not seen him for years before he relentlessly harassed her.

Hammersmith Magistrates’ Court heard on Thursday, September 24, that last week the Indian asylum seeker also got a photo of her face tattooed on his left forearm, Hammersmith Magistrates’ Court heard on Thursday last week.

Miss Kohli said she now struggles to sleep at night due to the worry.

Kanda was originally charged with stalking, but crown prosecutors accepted his guilty plea to harassment.

Tom Gill, prosecuting, said: “The food parcels consisted of fruit juices, cereal bars, fresh fruit, chocolate, and dairy products.

"The love letters that were being left stated that the defendant was in love with the complainant, and he left the food on the doorstep.

"The letters also referred to the complainant’s son as his son, which is not the case.

“He also has previously stated if the complainant ever dates another male he made reference to causing harm to them.

“He also has the complainant’s name tattooed on the side of his arm and on his neck as well as tattoos of the complainant’s son’s name on his arm and hand."

“When he was arrested in relation to this matter, when asked questions he made no comment in interview.”

Mr Gill read a paragraph from a statement given to police by Miss Kohli.

It read: “Receiving these parcels made me very nervous and scared to see him again because I don’t want contact from him, I have told him this.

Referring to his ‘unpredictable behaviour’, she said: “I had no contact with him in years and all of a sudden since February I have had none stop contact that is completely unwanted.

“I’m struggling to sleep at night though worry. I am worried about what he is capable of and what he is going to do next, especially as he stated if he sees me with anyone he will hurt them. I worry that he may be following me.”

Mr Gill added: “There has been a long history of other incidents that the complainant will not add in relation to this.

"The defendant believed that there was an intimate relationship but there never has been."

“There was reference to the son being his but I looked at the case, the defendant only got to know the complainant after the child was 18 months old.”

A mental health assessment read out in court stated Kanda did not have any mental health issues or any evidence of psychosis.

Kanda listened through an interpreter as the report stated that his parents were killed and he now ‘gets attached to people quite easily because he has never had any kind of parents’.

It concluded: “He gets attached and cannot move away from that person.”

Kanda was told not to contact the victim while and is barred from entering the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham while he is on bail.

Chair of the bench Laura Robarts (corr) said: ‘That means no letters through the post or otherwise, no emails, no social media contact, no Facebook or Twitter, no phone calls and above all, you must not go to where she lives.

“You must not go to anywhere she is likely to be, for instance the child’s school.”

Kanda was released on conditional bail ahead of sentence at Hammersmith Magistrates’ Court on Thursday. October 8.
