A DEDICATED student has been honoured for his commitment to his studies.

Sam Bailey, from Slough, who studied for an advanced apprenticeship in marine engineering at City College, Southampton, was awarded the Tom Demuth Marine Apprentice of the Year Award at the college’s awards ceremony on Wednesday last week.

Mr Bailey transferred to City College Southampton, despite it being a 120-mile round journey, after a college closer to where he lives which offered his course closed down.

The 21-year-old said: “City College Southampton was the closest college I could find that offered the expertise and course that I was looking for.

“I completed my apprenticeship four days a week at Bray Marina and commuted into Southampton on the other day to learn in the classrooms and workshops at their specialist marine skills centre.”

Mr Bailey was described by his tutors as showing great dedication and commitment to the course.

They said that he showed a natural flare for the work and always produced it to a high standard, his attitude in class was impeccable and he was never afraid to ask questions to further his subject knowledge.

He has now been offered a full-time role as a marine engineer at Bray Marina.
