A BRAVE shopkeeper managed to fend off a knife-wielding robber with an umbrella before chasing him out of his shop.

Prabaharan Kulam, owner of Brands Hill Post Office in London Road, Slough, bravely chased the armed robber from his shop on Sunday last week at around 10.45am.

Mr Kulam, in his 30s, said: “It was quiet at that point and I had come outside of the till.

We always keep fresh naan on the till and that’s what I was doing – tidying the bread.

“The door always beeps when someone comes in or out the shop.

“I heard the beep and then ‘open the till’. I looked at [the robber] and looked at the knife.”

Mr Kulam’s instinct kicked in immediately and rather than handing over the cash he fought for his livelihood.

He said: “My first thought was that I wanted to stop him from getting in the till.

“When I saw the knife I was surprised but I wasn’t scared. I just thought I had to fight back.”

The father-of-one made his way back behind the till only able to find a blue umbrella as he pressed the panic button.

Mr Kulam said: “He was threatening me with the knife – he tried his best, but I kept my distance and used the umbrella to keep the knife away from me.”

In the end the would-be robber ran out of the shop with Mr Kulam chasing him.

As he ran away he removed his mask and at one point looked back to see if he was still being chased – revealing his face to Mr Kulam. The incident has also been recorded on CCTV.

Rajni Prabaharan, his wife, said she is very proud of her husband and that the family do not feel scared.

She explained the CCTV videos play in their home above the shop but at that moment she was not watching the screens.

She said: “Obviously I can’t say exactly what I would have done but I’d like to think that if I had seen it happening I would have come down to help my husband.”

The offender is described as a white man, in his mid twenties to thirties, about 5ft 5ins and slim.

He was described as wearing a dark blue or black top with a light grey hood and light grey elbow patches.

Thames Valley Police confirmed they are investigating the incident and anyone with information should call 101.
