IT WAS a family affair at Holloways Park as father-and-son Lee and George Wallace lifted the Mary Wells Memorial Cup with Phoenix Old Boys.
Phoenix beat Eton Rifles 5-2 in the final with Mike Bevan and Luke Mann both netting doubles plus a strike from Josh Bertwhistle.
Manager Lee Wallace admits he could not have envisaged such success in Phoenix’s first season, nor could he see himself appear in a cup final with his 17-year-old son.
He told the Observer: “As a manager I was shocked because I didn’t expect that result. At the final whistle I was in another place, absolutely buzzing. It was just unbelievable.
“I was in a cup final with my son. I never thought I would play a game with him let alone a cup final. It was a family affair if you like because we had a lot watching on from the sidelines as well.
“People will say it’s one of those silly little cups, but it means the world to me. I didn’t expect it in our first year so there are no words for it, it was absolutely amazing.”
He added: “I couldn’t fault any one of my players one bit. It was no fluke at all. We were nervous at the start but settled and started to play our game. I was quite confident at half time and the first two goals stunned the opposition.
"We couldn’t believe our luck at 3-0 and killed them off with a fifth goal.
"We made a day of it and it was a great occasion. For me, making it to a cup final is more important than winning the league.”
