A FORMER Home Secretary returned to Slough to launch a campaign to remain in the European Union last Tuesday.

Alan Johnson MP, who used to work as a postman on the Britwell estate, spoke at the Aspire Centre in Edinburgh Avenue as he launched the Slough Labour Party's Labour In For Britain campaign.

Mr Johnson, who was celebrating his 66th birthday with the launch, spoke to members of the group as well as residents about the benefits of staying in the European Union ahead of the referendum on June 23.

He was joined by South East Member of European Parliament Anneliese Dodds, as well as Slough Borough Council leader Rob Anderson and Slough Labour Party leader Sohail Munawar.

Mr Johnson, chairman of the campaign, said: "If we leave we do not only damage ourselves, we damage other countries as well. It is the most profound decision of my lifetime.

"Slough is probably, more than any other place, the home of international companies who set up here because of the access to Europe.

"They have made it clear that they want to stay and they want to stay in Britain - it would have a hugely damaging effect on Slough if they left in terms of rates and employment."

The launch was the first stop on the launch tour, before it carried on to Oxford in a large red campaign bus.
