AN INSPIRING cyclist plans to ride a daunting 126 miles in just one day to raise awareness about a very serious issue.

In 2015, 126 women died as a result of male violence and as a way of highlighting this shocking figure, Anthony Wills plans to ride the same amount of miles to raise money for The Dash Charity, based in Slough, which helps women, men and children affected by domestic violence.

Jayne Donnelly, chief executive at The Dash Charity, said: “We’re delighted that he is standing up – or rather sitting down – and pedalling to speak out against male violence towards women and taking a lead role raising awareness of the 126 women that died due to domestic violence last year.

“Every mile he rides and pound he raises will help towards sustaining services that will ensure women and children live in safety and support future generations to do the same.”

The 62-year-old from Oxford plans to tackle the challenge on Saturday, September 3, despite his “dodgy joints” because the specialist service is desperately in need of funds to be able to continue and grow its work.

Having spent the last 18 years working to change the culture in policing and the wider partnership response to domestic violence, it is a cause very close to Mr Wills’ heart.

On his JustGiving page he said: “Things are better now but my experience of completing over 20 domestic homicide reviews clearly demonstrates that much still needs to improve.

“In every one of these cases a victim has suffered fatal injuries at the hands of someone known intimately to them.”

He added: “Whatever you can offer will help me achieve that aim and inspire me to keep my legs turning when all my senses are saying stop.

“But this is nothing to what women who suffer male violence have to undergo – so if not for me for them.”

Donors are able to contribute to the #EndDV126 fundraising campaign and support Mr Wills on his journey via the Virgin Money Giving event page.
