AN AXE-WIELDING man was detained under the Mental Health Act after police were called to an incident in a shop.

Police were called shortly after 9am on Thursday, following an incident at a shop in Ipswich Road, Slough, where a man was reportedly inside the premise with an axe.

The man left prior to police arrival. However, he was arrested nearby following an area search.

The 37-year-old was arrested on suspicion of affray and shoplifting. Following an assessment in police custody, the man was bailed until August 17, but detained under the Mental Health Act and transported to hospital where he remains.

No one was injured during the incident.
