FRIENDS of Slough Canal is appealing for more volunteers after receiving its certificate for adopting a section of the canal at Slough Canal Festival.
Phil Wyatt, 65, collected the certificate from a representative of the Canal and Rivers Trust, following the organisation adopting a section running from Middle Green bridge to Mansion Lane bridge. With that section under their care, the Friends of Slough Canal will be working to keep it free of litter – they run a monthly litter pick on the first Sunday of each month.
On the last litter pick, the volunteers collected over 100 bags of rubbish, as well as one abandoned bike.
Mr Wyatt said “We’ll be clearing out the canal of any litter, as well as reporting any defects to the Canal and Rivers Trust.”
“We adopted that section of the canal last year, but we collected our certificate at the Slough Canal Festival to increase awareness of who is responsible for clearing the river.”
Me Wyatt urged people to show respect for the canal and the wildlife that live there by taking litter home.
Mr Wyatt has lived on a canal boat for the last twenty years.
He said: “The canal is home to swans, ducks, and fish; plastics floating in the water endangers the wildlife.”
