SLOUGH’s temporary ice rink is to close at the end of the month, two weeks before the new permanent facility opens.

The temporary ice rink in Montem Lane is due to close on March 31, with the permanent Slough Ice Arena set for a grand opening on April 16.

A spokeswoman for Slough Borough Council said: “There will be no access to ice rink facilities for two short weeks as we make way for the reopening of the Slough Ice Arena in the week beginning 16 April, following a multi million pound rebuild.

“We understand that people may experience a temporary inconvenience but we are just weeks away from opening a wonderful new facility that will serve the people of Slough for decades to come.”

However, the council indicated that sports clubs will likely enjoy access to the ice arena before it opens to the public, meaning they may not be left without a facility.

The spokeswoman said: “Some sports clubs will have access before it opens to the public. I can’t say how much, as that will be an agreement between between them and the new operators, Everyone Active. But some may not have to wait.”

The latest announcement is in contrast to a claim in May last year when the council said it would open the new facility during March 2018, ‘ahead of schedule’. It also pledged the temporary rink would stay open until the opening.

The fully upgraded Slough Ice Arena will feature a new reception, cafe, and climbing wall, along with fully refurbished changing rooms and toilets, and a new, more efficient, chiller plant.

Cllr Rob Anderson said: “The extension is nearly complete and the building has already cemented itself as a prominent landmark along the Bath Road.

“We are delighted the Ice Arena will soon reopen its doors, providing residents with a state-of-the-art facility that will encourage them to improve their own health and wellbeing, while having fun.”

An official launch event to celebrate is planned for April 28.
