There was something for everyone at Burnham Donkey Derby on Saturday - including the satisfaction that knowing they had probably attended the most successful in the event's history.

Claire Popple, who was on the organising committee on behalf of Burnham Beeches Rotary Club, said it was already looking as if the amount raised for good causes would be £2,000 higher than in past years - which could take it to nearer £5,000.

The four legged racers all came from the Dashing Donkeys farm in Surrey, ridden by youngsters from riding schools.

There were seven races with supporters able to try their luck at picking the winners at the Tote before watching how the animals fared on the wide open space of Burnham Park.

A petting zoo offered children a chance to get up close and personal with a variety of cute and smaller animals.

But there were plenty of two legged contributors to the afternoon's entertainment.

Burham's own Pop Goes the Choir group was also there. This not for profit organisation has 120 members and has performed at the 2012 London Paralympics and on The Long Walk in Windsor for the Royal Marriage of Harry and Meghan.

Entertainment was also provided by the Azure Theatre School.

There was mini-train, a display by the South East Academy of Martial Arts and lots of stalls, run by people keen to raise money for their own favourite causes.

Mrs Popple said: "It is a real village affair with several generations of families coming along from grandparents to toddlers."
