ONE lane of the M4 was temporarily closed this morning after a car was completely destroyed by fire.

Firefighters from Slough fire station were called to the westbound motorway between junctions 6 and 7 at 10.30am, after a Vauxhall Zafira was well alight.

They used two breathing apparatus and two hose reels to extinguish the fire, which they tackled for around 20 minutes.

The hard shoulder and lane one of the carriageway were closed whilst the blaze was put out.

The female driver and two young children who were in the car escaped unharmed.

The fire is believed to have been caused by an mechanical fault in the engine which spread to the rest of the car.
