A GANG of men have been jailed after £90,000 worth of cigarettes were stolen in a series of burglaries.
The five thieves targeted a string of small businesses across Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Oxfordshire between January 17 and March 25, 2011.
Ashley Canavan, 21, from Dorney, Tom Jacob, 21, from Slough, Ryan Crocker, 21, from Farnham Royal, Sam Walker, 21, from Slough and Jack Dainty, 21, from Burnham were jailed at Aylesbury Crown Court on Friday (27/1) and all banned from driving for 20 months upon release.
Detective inspector Mark Lynch, leading the investigation, said: "This was a complex and lengthy investigation which took over six months of work to bring those responsible to justice.
"The investigation was led by detectives from the South Bucks area but involved working closely with police officers from six other areas.
"The judge commented that defendants had acted as a gang and had specifically targeted small business, already struggling in the current economic climate, and to make matters worse many had been breaching existing bail conditions for similar type offences."
Canavan was sentenced to 21 months in prison after pleading guilty to aiding and abetting a burglary at the Co-operative Store, Hazlemere on January 20, 2011 and at Budgens, Chalfont St Peter, on January 24, 2011.
Jacob was jailed for 27 months after pleading guilty to burglary at Budgens, Chalfont St Peter on January 24, 2011, at Sainsbury's, Farnham Common on March 8, 2011, and at the Post Office, Stoke Poges, on March 25 2011.
Crocker was put behind bars for 30 months after pleading guilty to a burglary at Budgens, Chalfont St Peter, on January 24, 2011, at Nisa stores, Wokingham on March 2, 2011, and at Sainsbury's, Farnham Common on March 8, 2011.
Walker was sentenced to 32 months in jail after pleading guilty to a burglary at Nisa, Wokingham, on March 2, 2011, and at Sainsbury's, Farnham Common, on March 8, 2011.
Dainty was jailed for eight months, banned from driving for 20 months and put back on his original ASBO following release, with a warning any further breaches would warrant a further custodial sentence, after pleading guilty to handling stolen cigarettes on February 16, 2011 and possession of cannabis on June 8, 2011.
