SINCE the launch of a campaign in 2008 called 'Proud to be Slough’, the phrase has regularly been wheeled out to try to rally the town’s residents to feel good about where they live.

The council was joined by the business community, public sector and voluntary groups in wanting 'people to be proud of their town and want to overcome the tired old clichés associated with Slough’.

The aim of the campaign was to change the 'perception of Slough both within and outside the town and create a sense of Slough being a sustainable community where people want to live, work, shop, learn, play and invest’.

But is the town’s own mayor - prestigiously regarded as 'the first citizen of the borough’ - Proud to be Slough? A two-month investigation by The Observer has uncovered evidence which suggests Cllr Balvinder Bains resides in a plush £860,000 house across the border in leafy South Bucks.

Cllr Bains tells constituents he lives at a property in London Road, Slough, but The Observer has obtained Land Registry records which state his registered address is a home in Taplow, on the outskirts of Dorney.
