'COWBOY builders’ have been targeted in a joint council and police crackdown operation.

A team of 24 community wardens from Slough Borough Council (SBC) and police officers visited 78 homes across the borough where building work was being carried out to sniff out rogue traders operating in the area and raise awareness of the risk of distraction burglary.

The operation was led by SBC trading standards on Wednesday, April 9, and while no-one was arrested for any offences relating to rogue trading, eight people were arrested on suspicion of working illegally.

Angela Satterly, compliance team leader for trading standards, said: “The worst type of rogue traders are those who extort money from elderly and vulnerable people, and they have a devastating impact on victims’ lives, both emotionally and financially.

“While it’s good news we didn’t encounter any of these people during this particular operation, we will continue to work all year round to stop them and support legitimate businesses who abide by the law.” If you wish to report a rogue trader, call Thames Valley Police on 101, or 999 in an emergency, or call trading standards on 01753 475111.
