Darran Brown’s men were in fantastic form from the opening whistle and although the game started off in fairly cagey fashion, it took just four minutes for Slough to cross the whitewash for the first time as James Fisher went over for an unconverted score.

The lead was extended shortly after when John Spandley went over, and this time Rob King added the extras to give Slough a 12-0 advantage.

The Upton Court Park side went further in front and all but put the final to bed before half-time as Mike Spandley, Curtis Blanchard, Ryan Littleboy all touched down, although the Phoenix pack did secure a penalty try to reduce the arrears slightly.

Phoenix made a spirited comeback after the break, gaining possession and metres and forcing their way over for a try to give themselves the slenderest of lifelines.

However, Slough were not to be denied their moment of glory and sealed an emphatic win thanks to further tries from Max Miles, Blanchard and a final score from Matt Prince to claim the trophy on their own turf.

Speaking after the game, a delighted Brown gushed: “I am very proud of the squad, players, coaches and club today.

“Finally we showed the belief, skill set and passion that had been vacant in a couple of games this year. This is our first step to further success and removing the weight from around our neck is a great feeling.

“To see and hear such great support for the players was instrumental in giving the lift required, and I want to say a massive thank you to all who turned up to witness such a great day for rugby.

“I asked the players (at the squad meeting) to start building a new club legacy from minute one and beyond and every member gave it their all. I can ask no more.” Slough return to Berks, Bucks & Oxon Premier action when they host Abingdon tomorrow (2.15pm ko).
