SECOND-HALF goals from Ed Smith and Charlie Mpi earned Slough Town an impressive 2-0 win at home to Biggleswade Town in the Southern League Premier Division on Tuesday night.

The Rebels started brightly and earned a couple of early corners, and it required a brilliant save from Biggleswade goalkeeper Ian Brown to prevent an own goal from Zach Tyrell after he connected with a Lewis Putman cross.

Dan Hicks then headed wide from a long Guy Hollis throw, before a defender blocked a Ryan Hope cross which looked destined for Mpi.

Warren Harris saw a half-volley sail over on 30 minutes, before Inih Effiong missed a half-chance for the visitors.

Shane Hill tried his luck from distance for the visitors, who were then unfortunate to see Gavin Hoyte limp off just before the break.

Rebels almost forced an opening shortly before half time, but Charlie Strutton’s effort went wide from a tight angle.

Slough continued to have the better of the play and had another chance on 53 minutes when Harris headed at Brown from a Hope cross.

They did take the lead when substitute Smith – who had only entered proceedings two minutes earlier – powered past a brace of defenders before firing home at the second attempt.

And they doubled their advantage eight minutes later when the unmarked Mpi headed home a corner from close range.

They could have added to the score shortly before the end, but Harris’ deflected shot was gathered up by Brown.

However, Biggleswade failed to really threaten and Neil Baker and Jon Underwood saw their side end a three-game losing run with ease.

The 11th-placed Rebels will hope to make it back-to-back wins when they welcome fellow mid-table side St Neots Town to Holloways Park this coming Saturday (3pm).
