AN amateur golfer from Slough is one step closer to playing with a star of the European Tour after winning a prestigious Bridgestone event on his club’s calendar.

Matthew Admans won Bridgestone UK tyre division’s DriveGuard Trophy at Stoke Park, which has put him on course for a round a the Pro-Am of the British Masters, supported by Sky Sports in October.

Admans (five handicap) won the medal competition with four over gross, which now puts him on a journey to a regional final in June, followed by a Pro-Am appearance at the Bridgestone Challenge – a Challenge Tour event – at the end of August in Heythrop Park in Oxfordshire.

And if Admans, 15, is part of the winning team at Heythrop, he will then go on to play at the Pro-Am of the British Masters at The Grove, where he will play with a household name of the sport.

Admans said he is happy that he won the tournament and is proud of his win, being one of the younger members of the team.

“It was by no means and easy win,” he said. “I started poorly and I was four over after six holes. I lost the ball in the trees at one point.

“I knew I was putting well though and started to play a little safer than my usual aggressive style. The switch worked and I was proud to come away the winner.

“Holes 15 to 18 were fantastic. I had one good birdie and one good up and down shot onto the green.

“I’m looking forward to going into the next round and I hope I can go far, just like Matthew Fitzpatrick who won last year’s British Masters.”
