JOHN ‘The Don’ Brennan has won the Global Boxing Union (GBU) Continental title after a first round knock-out win against Andre Hramyka.

Brennan had been away from boxing since both he and Sonny Whiting were disqualified in a non-contest back in April 2017.

The Slough-based super welterweight had declared his love for the sport ahead of his return to the ring and backed himself to win at the Thistle Hotel in Heathrow.

Brennan told the Observer: “I was very happy with the win as I had a fairly long build up to this one due to date changes to the show.

“I was also very happy with the crowd that turned out.

“I was pleased with the finishing shots as they’re something me and Gary Dawson (coach) had worked on at length in the gym. It’s a good feeling that the hard work had paid off.

“I was surprised it was in the first round but I was not surprised that I stopped Hryamika. I knew how good a condition I was in and I had the mind set before the fight that a stoppage or a conclusive win was a foregone conclusion.

“It was a great feeling to be back in the ring after almost 12 months out and hearing my name being cheered, plus having Skills C perform my ring entrance music as it gets me hyped and we bounce off each other.

“I’m delighted to be crowned the GBU Continental Super Welterweight Champion and the belt is a lovely strap.”

Brennan added that he could be back in the ring as early as next month with the aim to compete again for further titles in the long term.

He added: “I have a fight scheduled with my new manager, Derek Waddell, on a Warrior Boxing professional show in Watford on May 19. I’m hoping to get a few good, quick wins to get myself into major title contention - the Southern Area.”
