JAMES Dobson explained that he has learnt from his previous mistakes when holding his nerve to score two penalties in the 3-1 win against Kettering Town on Wednesday.

Slough Town had been guilty of missing from the spot this season but, when it mattered most in the play-off semi-finals, Dobson kept calm to twice beat Poppies keeper Paul White and send The Rebels into the final.

The Rebels leading scorer told the Observer: “I’m absolutely delighted and the team are as well.

“It was a diverse couple of halves really. We started well in the first-half but Kettering are a quality side and came back into it.

“There was disappointment on our part really and a bit of controversy with their goal maybe being offside, but at the end of the day the goal was given.

“We had a chat at half-time to just make sure we stayed in the game and we had real character about us going out for the second-half.”

He added: “If you look back a couple of months, we were dropping points on our part really where potentially we had a chance to win the league.

“It didn’t happen but credit to the guys because we have had a lot of away trips and we’ve picked up some great points. Any side that hits form going into the play-offs has got a chance.

“We prepared the best we could and it was our night on Wednesday, and hopefully we can do that again on Monday.

“We had two great chances with the penalties and luckily for me I stuck them both away.

“Having that two-goal cushion does naturally give you that bit of breathing space but we knew Kettering were going to come at us because they’re a very good side.

“We dug in very well and off the ball was quite important as well, that we keep everybody in front of us.”

Dobson continued: “We were practising penalties on Monday and you’ve got to have a calm about you when taking penalties.

“I’ve scored them and missed them so I guess it’s just about learning from your mistakes really, and I’m happy to score both penalties.”

“Overall we were the better team on the night and we are all just delighted that we’re through. In our eyes it’s not over yet, we’ve got another challenge ahead, but if we turn up hopefully we can do it again on Monday.”
