DANIEL Gaut made his boxing comeback with a third-round knock-out win against Nathan Finn at the Windsor Leisure Centre on Saturday.

Gaut, 31, suffered a first career defeat when losing his PowerBox Promotions heavyweight title to Fidel Asudi back in December.

The Slough star admitted that the defeat had humbled him and now feels he has a point to prove in a bid to regain the title.

Gaut told the Observer: “I didn’t expect to lose to Fidel and underestimated the opponent. I will not do that again and have trained with him since because it’s good to learn new things.

“I was nervous before the fight with Nathan. I don’t normally get that way but it’s good to be alert and on edge - it makes you perform better.

“I don’t want to lose again and feel I have a point to prove again. You tend to take things easy when you’re undefeated so to lose makes you better for it.”

Gaut believes his victory over Finn could have come sooner had the referee not stepped in during the first round.

He said: “Nathan was a very tough opponent but took a big shot in the first round. The referee jumped in for a standing eight count and he recovered well, but he was not able to do so when I caught him again in the third round.

“The fight could have been stopped in the first round. I had a clean open shot at his head and he definitely would have been out cold if the referee had allowed me to continue.

“Nathan was able to battle on and exchange big shots again but he was tired and fatigued so he legs went.

“I came out more aggressive than I normally would because I usually fight on the back foot and counter.

“I got a little greedy and took a big shot so revered back to my normal style, but I was throwing three or four punches in combination and was happy with my jab. It was on point all night and helped me control the fight.

“It was a good hard fight and good to blow off the cobwebs, so I’m very happy, and to get the knockout win as well was nice.”

Gaut will now bid to regain the PowerBox Promotions heavyweight title by winning a Last Man Standing contest, which also carries a £1,000 cash prize for the victor, in Windsor on July 21.
