WINDSOR, Slough, Eton & Hounslow started their winter season in style at the South of England Road Relay Championships at Aldershot on Saturday.

The highlights were silver medals for the boys under-15s and a dramatic bronze for the boys under-13s.

Jay Fieldmartin (10 minutes 08 seconds) led off for the under-15 team and came home in 17th, Callum Todd (10.00) blazed a trail through to sixth but Ben Bradley (10.28) slipped a place on the third leg before Ricky Harvie (9.38) secured a silver.

The under-13 race saw George Popplewell (10.54) finish 10th on the first leg, sprint specialist Giles Robinson (11.27) but George Gathercole (11.28) immediately made to go eighth and a storming last leg from Gus Cockle (10.45) saw him claim bronze on the line.

The senior ladies race saw the welcome return to club colours of Hayley Yelling, retired from international competition and a recent bride, she showed that she has lost little of her zest for the sport on the second leg for WSEH, moving her team up 34 places to eighth. However, the team of Leigh James, Yolanda Edwards and Abi Fudge finished 22nd overall.

The senior mens six stage event, held on Sunday, produced a brief moment of glory for WSEH when former international Benedict Whitby brought the club home in first place on the opening leg in 17.54. An unfit Steve Kimber (20.02) dropped back to 11th, Welsh international Owain Jones (19.22) restored WSEH to seventh and the team of Sam Gardner (20.25), Nathan White (19.11) and Ian May (19.55) finished in 10th in the end - the best placing by the local club for several years.
