BOBBY Sher insists Slough “need to pull their fingers out” after failing to beat rival club Burnham on Saturday.

Slough have recorded just a single win in Home Counties Division One and could not convert their superiority at Upton Court Park.

“It could have been better and it’s another game that we should have won, but we didn’t,” Slough skipper Sher told the Observer. “To be honest, I have been saying the same things most weeks now and sound like a bit of a broken record.

“We know we can perform and have a win and a draw from our last two games, which are better than losses, but we need to pull our figures out and do something now because a third of the season has gone.”

Shaan Khan (4-30) was the pick of the Slough bowlers as he claimed the wickets of Rizwan Nadeem (1), Fahad Raja (10), Adnan Shabbir (4) and overseas player Aftab Khan (68) – Burnham’s top four batsman.

The visitors posted a total of 207-8 from 55 overs with skipper Harveer Gandam (41) and Kuran Kumar (38*) adding to the score.

Steven Green (2-21) and Ali Akbar Raja (2-59) took further wickets for Slough.

“The pitch was a bit wet but fortunately for us we won the toss,” said Sher.

“We should have bowled them out for around 150, but we didn’t. Their guys stuck in and batted well, particularly Aftab, to get them up to a reasonable score. Shaan bowled extremely well in the right areas and could have had six or seven wickets. There was a possible chance that was not taken and a dropped catch as well.

“Bowling wise, we dug in so it was a good performance. I was reasonably happy but it was tough trying to bowl with a wet ball.”

Slough lost Green (9) and Nabil Shah (7) early on in their reply, but Waqas Hussain (52) and Khan (51) moved the score to 159-4.

However, their progress was slow and the home team eventually closed on 175-4 from 48 overs for a share of the spoils.

Shahid Yousaf finished unbeaten on 39 while Muhammad Haroon (2-35) and Khan (2-56) were the pick of the Burnham bowlers.

“I can’t put my finger on it,” said a frustrated Sher. “There was never a discussion not to go for the win.

“I just think the guys miss-calculated thinking that six or seven runs an over towards the end would be OK, but there are long boundaries here and it’s difficult to score when the field is out.

“You can’t blame Burnham for being defensive because that’s cricket and in hindsight we should have gone for it sooner.

“Shaan and Waqas both batted well and it was just unfortunate they couldn’t rotate the strike a bit better.

“We could have made it but we left it too late and it wasn’t meant to be.

“We were 30 runs short and only four wickets down, so we should have gone for it sooner but, they way things worked out, we didn’t.”

Slough travel to bottom-of-the-table and winless Harefield this Saturday while Burnham are at home to Tring Park (both 11am starts).
