CHALVEY Sports Chairman Scott Young has warned the club that they must continue to work hard in order to win any silverware this season.

The Stabmonks won the Hellenic Division Two East title last season and are on course to defend their crown, top of the table and unbeaten in eight matches.

Young believes the team deserves credit for what has been achieved so far, which includes a successful move into Arbour Park, but he knows they cannot take anything for granted in the New Year.

He told the Observer: It has been an excellent season so far. I know the manager (Merv Lloyd) is very happy to be top of the league and still in all the cup competitions.

“We know that if we want to win anything we still have a lot of work to do but to be in all the competitions still is excellent.

“If we want to win something then we’ve got to put the work in now as well as before Christmas. The message to the boys is don’t think you’ve won anything already because there’s still work to do.

“You can’t get to the top of this league and say you’ve definitely won it because there are so good clubs and teams. You can’t take anything for granted.

“We’re challenging for the league and still in four cup competitions so that speaks highly of the players we’ve got now.

“The management keep all of them disciplined and we all know what the end goal is, and they deserve credit for that.”

Chalvey travel to fifth-placed Abingdon Town this Saturday (3pm) and Young explained it is the first of a three-game tough period for the side.

Young said: “We have a big test at Abingdon who are a very good side. They started the season really well and were the pace setters before some indifferent results before Christmas.

“We had an excellent win at Penn & Tylers Green Reserves before Christmas and I would put Abingdon in that same promotion-chasing bracket so it will be a good game to play.”

Sports then welcome Windsor to Arbour Park in round three of the Challenge Cup next Tuesday (7.45pm).
