LANGLEY FC boss Peter Phillips believes his team are starting to see the benefits of a gruelling pre-season.
The Kedermister Park outfit had their physical fitness put to the test this summer in the same manner that a non-league club prepares for a new campaign.
Their superior fitness told during a 13-0 thrashing of Eton Wick on the opening day, and then in a Berks & Bucks Cup win on Saturday.
Langley held Risborough Rangers of Spartan South Midlands League to a 2-2 draw, and then held their nerves to win 5-3 on penalties.
Speaking to the Observer, Phillips beamed: “I’m over the moon when you consider all of their players get paid.
“We matched a semi-professional team and our young lads kept their calm for the penalties.
“We matched Rangers for fitness and we’re reaping the rewards of a hard pre-season.
“The extra training in pre-season has paid off, we’re a lot stronger and fitter. We look in better shape.
“We had to grind it out to get into extra time, but then should’ve put the game to bed with four clear-cut chances.
“We got a nice compliment from their management at the end, and thank you to them, they’re the kind of club we aspire to be.” However, despite their flying start to the new season Phillips is keen to keep his side’s feet on the ground.
They are newly-promoted to the East Berkshire Premier - Division One winners last year - and host The Lynchpin this Saturday.
Phillips commented: “It’s going to be a tough one but we will take each game as it comes.
“I’m keen to not let people get to carried away.
“To be honest, I only concentrate on my own team and our aims have not changed at all.
“There are some tough teams in the Premier and we will respect all opposition.
“But, if we can stand up to The Lynchpin physically, I think we can beat them.” **PICK up a copy of the Observer, out now, for all the latest sports news and action including more from our exclusive East Berkshire League coverage** **FOLLOW the Observer on Twitter at @Observer_sports**
