THE Lynchpin FC have won the East Berkshire Norfolkian Senior Cup after a 1-0 extra time win against Langley.

Riley Smith’s side defeated Langley in this season’s final at York Road, Maidenhead, last Thursday.

After 90 minutes without a goal, extra time was played, where Henry Wenman made himself an instant hero with a late winner.

And manager Smith hailed the winning strike as a ‘wonder goal’ and something Wenman has in his locker.

However, he is relieved that the final did not go to a dreaded penalty shoot-out after a less than impressive performance.

Smith told The Observer: “We should’ve had Langley in the first half and the game should never had gone into extra time.

“We had control in the first half but a few of our players tired in the second period, which gave Langley momentum.

“To be completely honest, we have had a hard run of games and the players we’ve signed are short on match fitness.

“The talk at half-time was to keep our heads up and dig in, but we just couldn’t put the ball in the net.

“But we dug deep and played the football that we know we’re capable of, not direct by pumping the ball long.” Smith continued: “It was a wonder goal but Henry has done that an awful lot this season.

“To be honest, at that point I was thinking the game has got penalties written all over it.

“Sometimes you need the rub of the green but things just weren’t going our way.

“My reaction was one of relief because I didn’t want penalties, and the players were over the moon.

“We knew that we had to win in order not to knock our confidence and lose the next few games.

“I was pleased with the result more than the level of performance, but we responded very well to losing the Slough Town Senior Cup final.

“It was a very good reaction from the players, and we received good compliments on the football we played.” The Lynchpin remain on course to retain their Premier Division title this season, thus completing a league and cup double.

Smith saw his side lose 1-0 away at Maidenhead Magpies on Wednesday night, their first league defeat in 13 league matches.

However, the Farnham Park outfit still have three games to overturn a four point lead currently held by Chalvey (WMC) Sports.

Smith added: “Chalvey sit at the top poised and waiting for us to drop points, but the title is in our hands.

“I don’t really see anyone else getting involved now and we could have it wrapped up in the coming weeks, which would be nice.

“There is lots of football to be played and midweek fixtures will be interesting, but we’ve got a big squad with good players to cope.” “If we get three points on Saturday and again next week it will be done and dusted.” **PICK up a copy of The Observer, out now, for all the latest sports news and action including pictures from The Lynchpin versus Langley** **FOLLOW The Observer on Twitter at @Observer_sports**
