BURNHAM skipper Harveer Gandam is targetting this Saturday’s Home Counties Premier League Division One clash with Banbury as a chance for his side to guarantee survival for another year.

His team returned to winning ways with a nail-biting five run success against Oxford last Saturday which ended a seven week wait for a win that had drawn them towards the relegation zone.

However Gandam is now eyeing the Banbury clash as the perfect opportunity to secure the 17 points needed for survival.

He said: “I can’t wait to play them and if we win we guarantee survival so I’m hoping for a good performance.” Against Oxford his side recovered from 130-8 to post 213-9 in their 50 overs, with Awais Basharat (36) top scoring.

And they then held their nerve to dismiss Oxford their opponents for 208 off the final ball of the game, with Azhar Ali claiming 3-40.

Gandam admitted: “It was a thriller and we didn’t know which way it was going to go. We messed it up with the bat but got up to a reasonable total - although I thought it was 40 or 50 short of where we should have been.

“It was a great bowling performance and I want to single out Mohammed Fazal who has been injured and Suleiman Javed.

“To bowl an off spinner in the first 10 overs when we could only have two men out was a risk but he didn’t offer them anything and it really helped later on.” Burnham remain unbeaten in the limited overs contests with four victories - in marked contrast to last year when they performed better in the longer format.

And Gandam said: “We have picked more bowlers that can do the job. Last year we were picking more batsman but this year we have had four or five bowlers who you know you’ll get 10 good overs from.” Slough set up a mouth-watering top-of-the-table clash with Henley after they beat Gerrards Cross by two wickets in an epic clash last Saturday.

Waqas Hussain (2-36) was the pick of the attack as Cross were restricted to 228-5 in their 50 overs, and although Slough wobbled in the run chase, an outstanding unbeaten 65 from Shahid Yousuf guided them home.
