HUNTERCOMBE ‘got a monkey off their backs’ after a 3-0 win at Chalvey Sports, according to player-boss John Brennan.

The Mercian Way outfit suffered defeat against Chalvey Sports in the Norfolkian Senior Cup last month, but were determined to reverse the tables last Saturday.

Brennan fired his players up for the Premier Division fixture, and they responded with a comfortable win at Farnham Park.

Huntercombe gained revenge for the earlier cup exit with Ben White, Alfie Clark and Jack Banks all on the scoresheet.

Brennan told the Observer, that the clash had added spice because of their previous encounter.

He said: “The Senior Cup game was really cagey, no-one wanted to make a mistake, possibly because it was early in the season.

“The referee was terrible that day. Chalvey were goading us all the time and were lucky to get away with it I think. They’re terrible for it and I can’t stand it.

“But, we had a decent referee last Saturday and it was scare free.

“A season of promise at Chalvey Sports is already whittling out.

“I put a lot of grind on the boys and there was a bit of needle in the game, but the only pressure in in-house.

“There was only one winner from start to finish and it should’ve been a few more.

“We got in front of goal but didn’t hit the corners, we hit it straight down the keepers’ throat.

“But, if you look at the result, we dominated from start to finish. We played total football and got a monkey off our backs.” The win saw Huntercombe top the Premier Division table, and now Brennan has backed them to open up a gap on the chasing pack.
