SLOUGH boxing sensation John ‘The Don’ Brennan is confident he can only improve after an impressive win on Saturday.

Brennan thrashed Kevin McCauley in a first round knockout at Rivermead Leisure Centre with the contest lasting just 75 seconds.

His new manager, George Carman Snr, warned McCauley would be a tough opponent to beat but even the veteran boxer could not handle the power Brennan possesses.

Brennan said: “I feel brand new now that it’s all done, and I’ll take a first round stoppage all day long because he is a tough kid.

“I thought I started poorly to tell you the truth. I was poor in my jab a little bit and took a couple of shots I shouldn’t have.

“I was looking for little chinks in his armour and saw he led in with his face a bit, so I led with a left hook and came over with a right hand.

“Kevin jumped on it and just went. I saw his lights switch off as he went over and thought he was in trouble then. He got up and beat the count at about eight or nine, and then the referee waved it off.

“He looked like he could go on but it was a punisher. If I go and fill him with a few more shots that might be bad for his career.” He continued: “George said to me do not go looking to knock him out because he’s tough as granite, a lot of people have said that to me.

“Mark Douglas has fought him and said that Kevin was a tough man, and don’t go looking for it because he’s a wily old fox who could catch me.

“I was trying to size him up a little bit and, when he was open a few times, I was getting a couple of shots off that would pay me dividends in the fight. Then he walked on to it and it was all over.” Brennan had taken time out of boxing to concentrate on his work and the birth of his two children, Bobby and Dollie.

However, he has now dedicated himself to the sport and aims to fulfil his potential and win a title this year, so long as he can learn to relax in the ring.

Brennan, 28, explained: “I’ve had two kids and they delayed my career but I was trying to get them to the point where they’re not so reliant on me.

“Now that they’re walking and talking it’s not so bad. I can leave them with people to crack on with boxing and get on with winning accolades to show them in years to come.

“I was also messing about with work a bit, thinking in the back of my mind that my boxing career is not progressing.” He added: “I am hurting people in sparring, but when it’s not happening I think what am I doing wrong, and then I’m rushing it.

“I’m not nervous just anxious, and when I relax I can stop people. If I catch them right, I can definitely put them over. I’ve got the power to put people away but have just got to stop rushing it.” Brennan was set for a quick return to the ring against the unbeaten Josh Leather at Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle on March 29.

However, Leather has now pulled out of the contest leaving Brennan to search for a new opponent ahead of a potential title challenge in Slough later this year.
