FARNHAM Royal have recorded a fourth win on the bounce in the BBO Championship after a 48-3 victory away at Aldermaston on Saturday.

The Royals certainly intend to end the season on a high and this latest success moves them up one place to fourth position in the table.

They were on the attack from the off and on the scoreboard after just six minutes.

Number eight Jamie Moffat was put into space out wide and powered through fourth tackles to cross in the corner for an unconverted try.

It definitely was not a game for the wingers and Farnham had no option but to change their game plan, deciding to keep the ball tight and take it up through the forwards.

They were rewarded on 12 minutes as flanker Stuart Moffat sliced through the Aldermaston defence, drawing the full-back before offloading to prop Jason Gumbs, who ran a great line to score under the posts.

Aldermaston were playing with a strong wind at their backs and used the elements well to gain territory and win a penalty after the Farnham midfield were pinned for being up in defence too quickly on 20 minutes.

The home side opted for a shot at goal but the well-struck attempt sailed just wide – so close that the home touch-judge raised his flag thinking the ball had gone over the bar.

The bottom-of-the-table team did secure their first and only points of the game minutes later.

The Royals were penalised for hands in the ruck and this time the Aldermaston number 10 made no mistake with his penalty attempt.

Farnham extended their lead seven minutes before the break after Stuart Moffat crossed for a try following one of his trademark arching runs.

The away side went into the break with a commanding 19-3 lead despite a very error stricken half.

Four minutes into the second period Stuart Moffat crossed for his second try after another rampaging run through the heart of the hosts’ defence, showing enough pace to round the full-back for a converted score.

Much to his delight, the score took him to equal top try scorer of the season with Wayne Garstang.

However, Garstang was not giving up the crown without a fight. On 54 minutes, he ran round the Aldermaston defence and powered through two cover-tackles to score under the posts.

Seven minutes later he crossed the whitewash again after picking up a loose Aldermaston pass in the midfield, sprinting free and scoring under the posts for another converted try.

In the 68th minute, lock Tony Ward crossed for the try of the game. A number of power runs from the forwards got them in behind the hosts and caught the defence short out wide.

John Cullivan popped up in the centres and straightened the line perfectly to feed his supporting players. As the ball went through four sets of hands it found to find Ward out wide, who crossed for an impressive team try.

Farnham Royal were then a bit sloppy with the restart and gave Aldermaston a first bit of meaningful possession and territory.

The home team came close to crossing the whitewash only for try-scorer Ward to become try saviour. His monstrous hit on his opposite number dislodged the ball just two-yards from the line.

Aldermaston were awarded a penalty for an infringement earlier in the piece and opted for a shot at goal which fell well short.

This turned the ball over to The Royals who worked the ball upfield for Gumbs to cross for his second try of the day, reminding Moffat and Garstang that he too is still on contention for the top-scorer award.

Farnham Royal host Faringdon on March 5 in their final match of the season.

Phoenix will win the league if they can secure two points at home to Berkshire Shire Hall.
