PHOENIX have won the BBO Championship this season with two matches remaining following a 50-15 win away at Littlemore on Saturday.

The Taplow club have been the dominant force in the Championship, losing just once in 18 matches, amassing a total of 629 points with an average of nearly 35 points-per-game, and conceding only 138.

Phoenix travelled to Littlemore for the second of the play-off matches knowing if they were to win the Championship and promotion into the BBO Premier next season would be theirs.

Despite having to make changes from their normal full strength team, Phoenix arrived with high hopes of a win, and from the outset the game plan was to play wide and move the big Littlemore forwards around.

Time and again they kept on pounding the hosts’ midfield and it was not long before the defence cracked and Bradley Coomber opened the scoring. The conversion from Jason Townsend started the ball rolling.

The next score came from a turnover ball. The ball went wide to John Winters who made a strong run to score.

Littlemore were fighting hard to maintain good possession and, with a kick to touch and well taken lineout ball, drove for the line. Although it looked like the visitors had managed to get under the ball the try was awarded.

Phoenix again took the game to the home side and good driving from the base of the scrum and a quick rucked ball saw full-back Austin Leavy enter the line to give room for winger Charlie Russell to score out wide.

Next on the score sheet was the very impressive Coomber who glided through the Littlemore defence to put Phoenix in a commanding lead at 26-5.

The hosts were not going to lie down easily though and a chink in the visitor’s armour allowed the scrum-half to find a hole and feed his centre to score out wide.

Phoenix changed their game plan at the break to work through the phases which put them in good stead as it was not long before they had scored a fifth try through full-back Leavy.

The visitors’ superior fitness then began to show and this lead to the next try from Winters, who had run 30-yards brushing off several tackles to cross under the posts.

With a further try from Leavy and Littlemore getting their end ended what was a good day for Phoenix and promotion into the BBO Premier next season.

The Phoenix celebrations begin with a trip to fourth in the table Harwell on April 16.
