SLOUGH Town joint-manager Neil Baker admits it is a good feeling to have their destiny in their own hands heading into the final match of the regular season.

The Rebels secured a seventh consecutive away win in the Southern Premier Division after a 4-0 victory at Royston Town on Tuesday thanks to two goals from Warren Harris plus strikes from Perry Coles and James Dobson.

Promotion rivals Kettering Town were beaten 3-2 at home to Tiverton Town on the same night, which leaves Slough in third position and gives them the chance to secure a home tie in the play-off semi-finals if they can beat Royston at Arbour Park this Saturday (3pm).

Baker told the Observer: “To be in the position we’re is unexpected if I’m brutally honest. I didn’t expect Kettering to drop points but maybe the games have caught up with them a little bit.

“It’s a bit of a surprise but nice to have our destiny in our own hands.

“We know Royston will be hurting a little so they will come looking to spoil the party.

“Although they only came up last season they’ve got some top players packed out with Conference South experience or higher.

“It’s always difficult to play the same team twice in four days but, if we can get the win, we know where we will be next Wednesday.

“We know we will have to be on our game and four points would have been a good return even though we know we need six. We’ve got to go for the six points now to finish on 99 points.”

Looking back on the win in midweek, Baker said: “It was a great victory really and a really impressive performance.

“We got the game killed off early on and that disheartened Royston a little, but it was a professional second-half performance as well.

“We thought Royston would cause a lot more problems but, with the exception of one or two chances, they didn’t cause us too many issues.

“It was a surprise because they’re a good team but credit to our players. Getting there was a nightmare so hats off to the boys, they keep on doing well whatever side we put out.”

Should Slough beat Royston this Saturday they will guarantee a home tie in the semi-finals next Wednesday (7.45pm).

Baker commented: "Since the start of pre-season we've been excellent. When you look at our start to the season and the FA Cup run, we've been in brilliant form.

"We have had a little dip since but I can't remember us losing two consecutive matches in the league.

"We came in for some stick around January-February time and that was a little unfair. We said then we needed support because we knew what we could do.

"We've brought in a couple of new players but the squad has largely been with us since the start."

He added: "I'm not saying that we are going to get promoted because we're in a strange position where four top sides are all in the play-offs.

"You could use rock, paper and scissors to decide who will be promoted because there's nothing between us.

"We're playing well away from home make no mistake about that, so if we have to go away we will hold no fear.

"From a club point of view we want to be at home, and from a manager’s point of view as well for the sake of not having to travel, but as managers we will not panic and deal with whatever comes our way after Saturday."
