THE GB Rowing Team announced on Tuesday that seven Berkshire stars will race at the World Rowing Cup in Aiguebelette, France next week.

The line-up includes the addition of two Berkshire performers, on top of the five that were taken to Serbia for the European Championships nine days ago.

Jack Beaumont of Maidenhead is one of the new names in the squad, with the 21-year-old set to row with Angus Groom (both of The Leander Club) in a second men’s double scull boat.

John Collins and Jonny Walton, who raced in the double scull at the European Championships, are in the first boat.

The other new name in the squad from Berkshire is Eleanor Piggott, who will partner Charlotte Taylor in a second boat in the lightweight women’s double scull.

Taylor impressed in Belgrade, making the ‘A’ final of the lightweight women’s single in her senior debut for the GB Rowing Team.

Last year Piggott won the lightweight double at the U23 World Rowing Championships in Linz, Austria.

The other Berkshire rowers in the squad for Aiguebelette were all medallists in Serbia. Sam Townsend (Reading) and Pete Lambert (Henley) were both members of the quadruple sculls crew which won a silver medal, along with Charles Cousins and Graeme Thomas.

Maidenhead resident and The Leander Club member Jono Clegg will race in the lightweight men’s pair with Sam Scrimgeour, having produced another silver medal winning performance at the European Championships.

Oliver Cook (Windsor) and Will Satch (Henley) were part of the men’s eight which brought home a bronze medal. However, the crew sees a number of changes for the World Rowing Cup.

Cook will row in a second men’s four along with Tom Ransley and Dan Ritchie - both returning from injury - and Phil Congdon, who is another that was in the bronze medal winning crew in Serbia.

Matt Gotrel has also been moved from that crew in the men’s pair with the returning Paul Bennett.

GB Rowing Team performance director, Sir David Tanner said: “Once again we’re fielding a strong squad, but one where we test out young rowers and new combinations.

“This is a critical year in the Olympic cycle and the chief coaches, Paul Thompson and Jurgen Grobley, are aiming to win medals, but also to tease out our longer-term strengths.” **PICK up a copy of the Observer, out every Friday, for all the latest sports news and action** **FOLLOW the Observer on Twitter at @Observer_sports**
