HUNDREDS of children took part in special Easter football tournaments, which aims to support low income families.

Sports Inc, which has been running in Slough for around 25 years, hosted four days of sessions for children aged between 11 and 16 during the holidays.

Tony Thompson, one of the founders alongside Lawrence Richardson, said: “The idea behind Sports Inc was to give kids who might not only have the talent in sport but also allow them to be inspired to bring that direction into other parts of their life.

“We work with a lot of kids who struggle in school and this particular activity has so many different benefits, you’ve got the physical aspects, but you’ve also got the social aspects of it.

“They learn so many skills such as teamwork, leadership, resolution, which kids struggle with, and all of this comes to the forefront here.”

Mr Thompson added it is "essential" they let the children be themselves and be relaxed in a safe environment.

He said: “The parents love it for a number of reasons, they know they’re outside being active, they know it’s a safe environment, but we also target low income families by providing free school meals so it's a form of childcare as well, and I think those families are even more grateful we do that."

George Torpey, who joined the Sports Inc team last year, originally took part in the tournaments himself when he was younger.

He said: “It's a fantastic opportunity for myself because I went through these experiences growing up so to be on the other side of it and to see the kids building relationships and of course enjoying the football is an amazing thing to see.”

"We want the kids to come here and enjoy themselves and have a great day out but it's mainly about brinigng the community together, meeting new people."

Mr Torpey added the response from families has been fantastic.

"We've had over 400 signs up's which has been incredible," he said.

"Speaking to the parents who drop them off each day have loved the fact theycan bring their kids somewhere to socialise and to just be able to get out of the house., which is something we haven't really been able to do for the past two years."

Sports Inc goal for the future is to run more holiday sessions over summer and the Christmas holidays.

Mr Thompson said his long term plans is to hopefully open a sports club in Chaley.
