PLANS to demolish a warehouse near Slough town centre and replace it with 50 flats have been approved by councillors.

The former Calitek Health and Home storage facility at Grace House, in Petersfield Avenue, will be replaced by a five-storey apartment block consisting of 22 one-beds and 28 two-beds.

The area is predominantly an industrial area but has seen planning applications for residential redevelopment approved before.

Cllr Safdar Ali (Lab: Central) said: “There are still a lot of industrial units at Petersfield Avenue. I think this [the flats plan] will lead to further changes from industrial to residential and I hope the council and the [planning] committee will keep that onboard when it comes to the parking and extra facilities that are needed in the area for the residents that will eventually move into these units.”

Access is located from the southeast corner of the site which will lead to a basement car park that provides 47 spaces – including four disabled bays – and 60 cycle spaces.

No affordable housing is proposed due to it being unviable for the developer but pledged to contribute some off-site affordable housing and have a review mechanism to see if some can be delivered onsite. The developer will also make a financial contribution towards education and recreation via a section 106 agreement.

The site is also not compliant with the council’s parking policy as it needs 77 parking bays, 30 more than it is currently proposing.

Highway officers said the site will be “too constrained” for more car parking spaces to be added and 47 bays is the most the developer can provide.

Councillors sitting on the planning committee unanimously approved the scheme on Thursday, September 29.
