SLOUGH’S MP Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi has called for the “calamitous” Prime Minister to step aside and call for a general election.

Jeremy Hunt, the UK’s fourth Chancellor of the Exchequer in just four months, was challenged by the Labour MP in the face of continued chaos in Westminster.

Mr Hunt, who took over the top role after his predecessor Kwasi Kwarteng was sacked, has junked most of Liz Truss’ unfunded pledges in the so-called mini budget, such as cuts to income tax and corporation tax, which spooked the market and caused the pound to drop to a historic low.

He warned “more difficult decisions” will have to be made and that “all government departments will need to redouble their efforts to find savings and some areas of spending will need to be cut.”

Tan Dhesi said: “In the history of British democracy have we ever had such a calamitous start from a Prime Minister and now four Chancellors in four months?

“But it was a majority of Conservative MPs and members who inflicted upon our country the fantasy of trickle-down economics when they naively decided to take a break, a holiday from reality, which has left many of my Slough constituents struggling to pay their pays.”

He also said the Chancellor and the Prime Minister “no longer have a democratic mandate” to continue and should step aside to allow for a general election.

Mr Hunt replied: “I don’t think a general election would contribute to stability if people had to worry about the disastrous policies of a future Labour government.”
