“THE last thing we need is another Conservative in charge.”

That’s what Slough’s Labour MP Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi said as Liz Truss announces she is stepping down as prime minister after 44 days in the top role – making her the shortest-serving prime minister in UK history.

Ms Truss said she could not deliver the mandate on which she was elected to do. Her premiership was in turmoil since her mini budget rocked the markets, resulting in major u-turns.

Mr Dhesi said: “Liz Truss' premiership was the shortest and most destructive in the history of the office of Prime Minister. Political instability, economic destruction and our country’s international reputation diminished.

“This is the legacy of her 44 days in office. The last thing we need is another Conservative in charge. We need a Labour government and a general election now.”

Conservative members are expected to vote for a new party leader with a result expected by Friday next week.
