A major high-street retailer is preparing to close 11 stores by the end of the year.

Clothing giant Next has announced that they will be shuttering nearly a dozen stores for various reasons.

It comes just days after Wilko begins to close the last of their stores after falling failing to find a buyer having fallen into administration.

Next said the closures were being made for a range of reasons including stores not meeting their target margins, sites being redeveloped and not being able to agree "acceptable new terms" with landlords.

Berkshire is currently home to three Nexts.

These include the Next on the Bath Road in Slough, which has seen many closure rumours over the last year following the sale of the retail park.

This month, New Look joined the likes of Argos and Furniture Village in vacating the site which now sits with five empty units following the site's change of owner in January.

Next also has a store in Bracknell, complete with a Costa cafe.

Reading has recently seen the loss of Next Beauty and Home in the Oracle Shopping Centre.

It is understood the site will now be used for housing.

However, a Next store remains at the Forbury Outlet.

A spokesperson for Next said: "We expect to close 11 mainline stores this year.

"Six closures are in locations where we forecast that the store would not achieve our target margin on almost any terms; two closures are due to the site being redeveloped; three further closures are as a result of being unable to agree acceptable new terms with landlords.

"This last category includes one large store where the length of the lease proposed by the landlord, on a high fixed rent charge, was not something we could agree to."

The exact locations of the Next stores closing this year are not yet known.

Next have been approached for further comment.
