DILLY Newton insists Slough will not be taking anything for granted when they face Sutton Coldfield in their Super Sixes semi-final at the SSE Arena in Wembley, on Sunday (11am).

The Pink and Blacks crushed their opponents – also known as the Mighty Pinks – by a massive 9-3 margin on their way to finishing top of the Premier Indoor League, but Slough realise it could be a much different encounter this time around.

“We hope we can beat Sutton again but in a semi-final anything can happen,” said Newton. “In indoor hockey, things can change in a matter of seconds.

“We’ve just missed out in the last couple of years, so we’re really looking forward to Sunday. This is our first time at Wembley, but I’ve been there as a spectator. It’s a brilliant event.”

Newton was Slough’s top scorer in the indoor league with nine goals, but admits: “Indoors, it’s a real team sport. It’s fast and it doesn’t matter who puts the ball into the net as everyone has a massive part to play in the game.”

Newton was also on target on Sunday with first-half penalty corner as a depleted Slough side beat University of Birmingham 1-0 in a friendly at Upton Court Park.

Newton described it as a good work out, adding: “It was nice to get back out on an outdoor pitch after a long break over Christmas.”

Head coach Kali Takher commented: “We only had 12 players, of which only four were first-team regulars, so I’m really proud of what they achieved and it bodes well for the future. It may only be a training game, but you want to do well and we did.

“Birmingham played some very nice hockey, as they always do, and they had some half chances, but we defended well.

“I thought all our girls from the second team stepped up well, and that is posing me a few thoughts regarding selection problems for when we resume the league in two weeks time.”

Looking forward to Super Sixes day, Takher added: “It will be lovely to do well at Wembley as we exceeded our expectations by winning the league.

“The club have really brought into it. They are making it a big event and I think we have over 250 spectators going, which is really nice for the players.”

With Slough having called off a proposed friendly with Leicester on Saturday, Takher continued: “I want the girls involved in the indoors to be happy and excited, and play their socks off at Wembley.

"Fingers crossed, we can get past Sutton to play Canterbury or Bowdon in the final.”
